Jack Romano, THE italo-british GAMMA expert wrote:
Dietmar, officially NO Gammas were delivered in black, to Europe. They were a special order. The reason is that the panels for the Gamma (and the Ferrari 400) were stamped out on very old machinery by Pininfarina. This machinery is from the 1920's. As a result, the panels have slight 'ripples' in them - very slight, but a professional would spot them. As time went on, it got worse, this is why the Series II were done in metallic - hides the ripples better. For a black car, the very best panels had to be selected, because black shows everything. This is why black was a special order, and was about £500 extra in UK. Some embassy cars were black, but these were usually berlinas. (nearly all Italian embassies in Europe had Gammas; also all the management of IVECO trucks had them too). Most black cars also came with air con., and leather interior. They look fantastic. There used to be a poster issued by the factory of a black coupe, with tan leather interior. It was so beautiful that dozens of Gamma owners rushed out and immediately had their cars sprayed black - mistake - unless the panels were perfect, it looked dreadful...I'd love a black one - good for the image . We know of about 30 Gamma coupes in the world that are black, and I would guess that half of these are not original...rare car. The designer of the car is Aldo Brovarone, working for Pininfarina, who also designed the famous DINO Ferrari and recently, already retired, the Fiat / Abarth Barchetta for STOLA.

Ignition coil and resistor should be changed to new BOSCH ones and the burnt heater motor two stage switch |
the heater motor bearing, that caused so much errors and harm |
Blaupunkt, to me the best Radio to fit the Gamma design |
First I got the car checked by our BOSCH service, the idle was much too fast and the CO much too low because of "wrong air" by a leaking tube.
Than we found a burnt switch for the heater motor. The bearing was worn and they had changed the fuse to a stronger one with the result that all related switches and plugs were burnt. The bearing was changed and all switches and plugs renewed. Next I will change brake discs and pads, strut inserts, strut buffers, substitute the electric mirror and add the door lights. I got genuine parts by Jack Romano from the Gamma consortium and M.A.R.A. of Italy. All parts were flawless and did fit. The installation of the struts should be done by a very experienced expert since the springs are extremly strong. I replaced also the four front brake lines which were at once available next town from ITALCARS
A lot of mysteric and dangerous electric problems showed up on the way to the Lancia Club Vincenzo 2000 meeting in Italy. The reason was located as a bad mass contact of the water temperatur sensor, which is down the radiator on the passenger side of the car.Next was the rear brakes: the dustshield of the calipers were broken, the pistons fixed. I got a repair kit from my FIAT dealer and changed disks and pads.
How to install new shocks (Jack Romano):
Yes, you need to uninstall the springs, and open the strut. The strut will have alocking nut in either the form of an + or a - shape. You can undo it with any tool really, you don't need a special one. I use the key from a grinding wheel (!) the one that you use to lock the grinding disc with... You need to remove the old cartridige, and clean out the tube a little, then slip in the Koni's and that's it. I'll send you a fax with a diagram if you like. It is an original Lancia technique, and it is shown in the workshop manual...When dismantling the suspension be careful - the front springs are especially powerful. Its also a good chance to clean it all, and throw some protecting wax up there. Check the turret tops, which bolt onto the wing, as these have a habit of rusting out - the spring acts as a 'chimney' and drags a lot of moisture up there.
