Fixed caliper brakes or floating caliper brakes - which type has what it takes to be a high-performance braking system?

Before we can answer this question, let's take a brief look at the difference between the two types of brakes. This lies primarily in the way they work.

With a floating caliper brake, the brake caliper is located on a movable bracket and usually only has one or two pistons on one side of the brake disk. When the brake pedal is depressed, the piston presses the inner brake pad against the disk, causing the entire caliper to move to the opposite side and thus also contact the outer pad.

In contrast, the fixed caliper brake is rigidly installed and has at least two, three, four or even five pistons on each side of the brake disk. This results, for example, in a 6-piston or 8-piston fixed calliper system, whereby the sum of the pistons per fixed calliper is meant here. Due to the simultaneous pressure, the brake pads are pressed symmetrically onto the disc from both sides.

While floating caliper brakes are easier and cheaper to manufacture due to their simpler design, fixed caliper brakes offer clear advantages in terms of braking performance and durability.
