Brake fluid is a seemingly inconspicuous, but nevertheless indispensable element in every brake system. Without it, safe braking with hydraulic brake systems would be impossible.

Brake fluid and hydraulics briefly explained

Brake fluid is the transmitter of hydraulic pressure within a brake system - from the brake pedal to the brake disk. Hydraulics is a technology in which fluids are used to transmit large forces with little effort and very precisely.

The principle of hydraulics is basically explained quite simply:

  1. Liquid as a medium: Liquid is used because it is not compressible, i.e. unlike gases, for example, it cannot be compressed and the initial force is therefore not lost.
  2. Pump generates pressure: A pump forces the liquid into a closed system, thereby creating pressure.
  3. Pressure is transmitted: The pressure is transmitted via pipes or hoses using the liquid.
  4. Force conversion: At the target point (e.g. piston), the pressure is converted into movement or force.

In order for the brake fluid to perform its function reliably, it must have certain properties.

Non-compressible: For loss-free brake force transmission

Liquid cannot be compressed, which is necessary to transfer the pressure without loss.

Corrosion protection: for a long-lasting brake system

The glycol base protects the materials of the brake system against corrosion and decomposition, as otherwise the brakes could be damaged and a considerable safety risk could arise.

Frost-free: for winter driving safety

Brake fluid remains liquid even at low temperatures so that your brakes work reliably in winter conditions. If the brake fluid were to freeze, the brake system would fail.

High boiling point: for stable braking performance

Brake fluid must be able to withstand temperatures of well over 200 degrees Celsius without boiling. When boiling, the fluid becomes compressible due to the gases produced, which would have fatal consequences for braking performance and safety.

Airtight system: to protect against moisture

The brake fluid reservoir is sealed airtight to keep moisture out. This prevents contact with air humidity, which could introduce water into the fluid. Water content lowers the boiling point, promotes corrosion and impairs braking performance.

Regular change: due to hygroscopic properties

Due to its hygroscopic properties, the brake fluid draws water from the environment, even in a closed system. This lowers the boiling point and increases the risk of vapor bubble formation at high temperatures, which can significantly impair braking power. In addition, the brake fluid ages chemically, which further reduces its efficiency. You should therefore change the brake fluid regularly.

Particularly in the sport performance sector, for example on the racetrack, the brake system can reach considerably higher temperatures than in road traffic, for example, due to the higher speed and more intensive braking maneuvers. Brake fluids used here must have a higher boiling temperature. This enables them to withstand the pressure even at significantly higher temperatures.

Brake fluids for racing are usually more hygroscopic, i.e. they draw water out of their environment more quickly and easily. They therefore need to be changed more frequently to prevent damage to the brake system or loss of braking power.

What does the term "DOT" stand for?

DOT stands for Department of Transportation, a US authority that sets standards for brake fluids that are used worldwide. In this context, DOT refers to a classification of brake fluid according to its technical properties, in particular its boiling point and chemical composition.

DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1: Hygroscopic

These brake fluids absorb water from the air, which lowers the boiling point. Regular changes are therefore necessary.

DOT 5: Non-hygroscopic

Does not absorb water, but protects less against corrosion and is incompatible with systems that use DOT 3/4.

In a brake system, a basic distinction is made between brake lines and brake hoses - both fulfill different tasks:

  • Brake lines are made of metal. They run stationary along the vehicle and transmit the hydraulic pressure, i.e. the brake fluid, from the brake master cylinder to the brake systems on the wheels.
  • Brake hoses are made of rubber as standard. They connect the fixed brake lines to the moving wheel components and adapt to steering or spring movements.

Steel flex lines replace conventional rubber brake hoses. Rubber hoses have a natural elasticity, which can lead to pressure loss - especially under high loads. This is where steel flex lines come into play.

    While rubber hoses expand slightly under high pressure, steel flex lines are reinforced with a steel mesh sheath. As a result, the shape remains practically unchanged and the pressure is transmitted without loss.

    Steel flex lines consist of a flexible TEFLON inner tube that is both temperature-resistant and durable. The steel mesh provides additional stability without restricting the necessary mobility and flexibility .
